Scientists studied old grape from France and Spain. Some of the were from about 4,000 years ago. The team wanted to learn how people changed over time and how old types are linked to people still grow today.

The researchers took from 49 They found that many very old were wild. But after about 500 B.C.E., people started to keep the plants they liked and grow new vines from cut pieces. This way of copying a plant is still used now.

One seed from a hospital toilet in France was about 600 years old and matched modern pinot noir. Scientists do not know if people ate the fruit or made wine with it. But the result suggests liked this grape so much that they kept it almost unchanged for centuries.
